The LORD knoweth the way of the righteous

As you may know, I have a daily Bible reading page on the site, it’s an easy way of being able to read through the Bible in a year. One day I would like to add more Bible reading plans and options, at the moment it’s a chronological ‘read through the Bible in a year’ in the King James version of the Bible. Or as some people like to call it, the ‘Authorised Version’.

Today begins the journey through the book of Psalms , a book which incidentally contains both the longest chapter in the bible (Psalm 119 which has 176 verses) and the shortest (Psalm 117 which has but two) and it struck me how in today’s readings – Psalms 1 to Psalms 8 – the consequences for choices we make in life are clearly spelled out.

Here are verses 1 and 2 of Psalm 1

Who do you say I am?

One thing that I find difficult to understand about some of my fellow Christians is why they seem to think that being a Christian means that we all turn into the no fun faith. If you visit any Christian forums you’ll see people who refuse to watch certain TV programmes, won’t read certain books, etc etc. Don’t you dare go enjoying yourself!

So it made a nice change to come across a post on Maggi Dawn’s blog with a Jesus joke which I’ve reproduced here.

And Jesus said unto them, “And whom do you say that I am?”

They replied,

“You are the totaliter aliter, the vestigious trinitatum who speaks to us in the modality of Christo-monism.”

” You are the impossible possibility who brings to us, your children of light and children of darkness, the overwhelming roughness’ in the midst of our fraught condition of estrangement and brokenness in the contiguity and existential anxieties of our ontological relationships.

Did I miss the second coming?

I’ve been a keen student of end times teachings for a number of years now and, until yesterday, I thought that I was familiar with all the different possible interpretations of what the Bible says about the end times.

Yesterday I learned that there are some people who believe that everything prophesied in the Bible has come to pass, including the second coming of our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ. Such people apparently are called Radical or Complete Preterists.

Now I know that much Biblical prophecy is about as clear as mud and open to different interpretation – or misinterpretation – but I must admit I really do not see how anybody could think the second coming has been fulfilled.

The key passages lie in the Olivet Discourse and Christ’s words in Matthew 24 and 25.

Was Jesus A Shock Jock?

I was reading an article the other day where a guy was talking about the Don Imus affair and made the claim that just as Imus shocked people, so did Jesus Christ in much the same way, making Jesus the original shock jock.

And I thought to myself “don’t be ridiculous”.

A shock jock says outrageous things that upset innocent people – and in some cases pays the price – whereas Jesus was just controversial. He didn’t deliberately upset anybody. You can’t compare the two.

But then yesterday I was reading something about parables which said that Jesus’ parables would have a twist which ‘disturbed the hearers assumptions about the way things are’ – and my mind immediately went back to the shock jock claim.

So I decided that maybe there was more to this claim than I thought. Let’s look at some of the words in red (as I like to call them) and see.

Lesbian Sues Christian Dating Site

Christian dating site eharmony.com , which was founded by Christian evangelical Neil Warren, is being sued by a North Californian woman on the basis that the site discriminates against gays, lesbians and bisexuals.

The woman said she tried to use the eharmony.com site in February to meet a woman, but could not based on her sexual orientation.

So she has filed a lawsuit which claims that, by only offering to find a compatible match for men seeking women or women seeking men, the company was violating state law barring discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

While she’s at it, maybe she could file a claim against the Roman Catholic church for refusing to have female priests, presumably that violates the same state law.

eHarmony have issued a statement saying: “Nothing precludes us from providing same-sex matching in the future, it’s just not a service we offer now based upon the research we have conducted.”
